A meter is longer than a yard and a bit more than three feet. If you have a length in meters — a doorway, a room, a person, a roll of fabric — the usual US customary answer is feet and leftover inches, not a long decimal in feet.
MeasureZone keeps the official factor on the length converter (choose meters → feet). This guide is the same math, written out so you can check a number by hand.
The exact factor
One international foot is 0.3048 meters, exactly. Flip that and you get:
feet = meters ÷ 0.3048
or, same thing:
feet = meters × 3.280839895
Do not round the factor to 3.28 if you care about the last inch on a long span. Use 0.3048 (or the full reciprocal) and round the answer, not the constant.
Worked example: 1.75 m to feet and inches
Suppose a height is 1.75 m.
- Divide by 0.3048:
1.75 ÷ 0.3048 ≈ 5.74147 ft - Whole feet: 5 ft
- Leftover feet:
0.74147 × 12 ≈ 8.90 in
So 1.75 m is about 5 ft 8.9 in, which people often say as 5′9″ after rounding to the nearest inch.
Open the length converter, type 1.75, and you should see the same split. If you started from feet and inches instead, switch the dropdowns to feet → meters.
When you only need decimal feet
Plans, CAD, and some calculators want 5.74 ft, not 5 ft 9 in. Keep the decimal. Convert to inches only when a person will read the number on a tape.
Quick checks:
- 1 m ≈ 3.281 ft
- 2 m ≈ 6.562 ft
- 3 m ≈ 9.843 ft

If the measurement arrived in centimeters, convert cm to feet instead of going through meters by hand. Inches-only lengths belong on inches to centimeters.
Bottom line
Divide meters by 0.3048 for feet. Multiply the leftover fraction of a foot by 12 for inches. For a live check, use the MeasureZone length converter.
